About us . . .
Our Vision is ‘to set the table for humanity where everyone is loved, welcomed, nourished and celebrated.’
Our table is large and we strive to be a home where every ethnicity, age, gender, faith or social status is welcome. Our hope is that in our differences we would mingle, learn, grow and celebrate one another, and through this convergence of lives, benefit the local community of Langley and world at large.
Here are some of the things that are matter to us as a business:
“family and community; music, arts and creativity; ethical practices and social justice, fairly traded products, health; quality and freshness, local and organic whole ingredients.”
We endeavour to provide a unique cafe/bistro experience that embodies our vision through excellence of product and service. As Jenn Cornish (Owner) states:
“We are a business – a business that is noticeably unique operating on multiple bottom lines – environmental, economic, and social. We desire that our business would be a transformational service for the common good of Langley. We want to see this community flourish. We want to play our part.
Good business practices says that we need to pick one demographic of society in order to be successful however that’s not what the Water Shed is about. We are intentionally trying to do something different by creating a space where everyone can be welcomed, valued and can feel at home. Therefore, whilst normal business practices need to be respected our vision requires us to innovate and think outside of these norms.
Nourishing food and drink can be the catalyst for human flourishing and connection. This is why I do this, because I love people and want to celebrate the goodness of life with amazing food and drink.”
Jenn Cornish has been a food lover since a wee wee lass watching her British Grandmother cook up scrumptious food for the family. Prior to owning the Water Shed, Jenn was a personal chef cooking for people, places and events both in commercial and home settings. Her ability to put flavours together has earned her a great reputation as an excellent chef in the suburbs of Langley and also further afield.
Since owning the Water Shed Jenn has been diagnosed with a ‘unknown’ autoimmune disease which seriously inhibited her huge capacity for work. Not wanting to stop working nor stuff her face with chemicals (i.e pain meds), Jenn now manages her pain levels through diet making her a go-to for creative and delicious food by those in the neighbourhood who find themselves in similar circumstance.
Naomi loves people and has a great ability to connect with all ages and and backgrounds. Finding common ground between people is one of her specialties which is what makes her working at the Water Shed such an asset. Often you will find her floating around the Shed greeting new customers, chatting and laughing with old ones, talking technology, philosophy and marketing with business people, and generally helping the incredible Water Shed wizards do their job!
Naomi also has a strong background in the communications and the creative arts helping organizations and businesses articulate and amplify their message.
Assistant & Events Manager
Josh is a key player of the team. Working alongside Naomi and Jenn, Josh brings his expertise in relating to people and passion for music to the mix. He doesn’t just manage the day to day running of The Water Shed he also is the point person for all things musical that happen in our space. With a background in music production and artist management, Josh’s passion is to see the arts celebrated in our neighbourhood.
Music is a very powerful magic that can bring otherwise divided and unfamiliar people together in a room. It can create space for connections to be made and positive change to happen. If you are an artist or ambassador for the arts and would like to find out more about how you can get connected with the music life of the venue then Josh is the person you need to contact.
Water Shed Wizards
Make the place run
The Water Shed Wizards are a family who make the venue magical. Rarely do they stop moving as they are often concocting baked goodies, delicious sandwiches, hearty jacket potatoes, thirst quenching drinks and much, much more. Feel free to interrupt their potion making endeavours, just don’t be alarmed if they mutter to themselves!!
